Abstract

Piaggio & C. S.p.A. is developing a new twin engine for motorbike application.
Particular attention has been paid to the development of the con rod, whose fatigue and stiffness performance has been assessed with some CAE analyses.
The dynamic loading conditions have been estimated with a multibody model and have been used to estimate the stress field in the component and the deformations, using a finite element model.
The analyses have allowed to optimize the con rod's geometry, consistent with the global engine data (e.g. con rod effective length) and manufacturing constraints.
